Using the Client Agents

Configuring non-UNIX Client Agents

You must configure the Client Agent on each client system you wish to backup with ARCserveIT. To configure the Client Agent machine:

  1. Open the Client Agent program

  2. In the Client Agent dialog box, select Configuration. The list below describes the available options:

option use
System Security Note: This option is for Windows NT clients only
Uses the Windows NT security for authentication
Packet Size Note: This option is for Windows 3.x clients only
Choose the packet size that the Client Agent will use to pass data to the ARCserveIT server.
Password Security Before you execute a job to a targeted client machine, you can assign a password at the agent level to increase security. This requires the ARCserveIT user to specify a password in order to back up or restore to this machine.
IP Address The Client Agent supports the use of multiple Network Interface Cards (NICs). For machines with more than one network card, the client agent will select one IP address by default. You can manually override this selection by entering a new IP address.
Priority

  • High: Foreground processing performs Client Agent functions before other processes.

  • Normal: Standard processing performs Client Agent functions without special status.

  • Low: Standard processing performs Client Agent functions when other processes are idle.
Pre/Post execution programs Enter the name of batch programs (e.g. C:/WINAGENT/PRE.CMD) to be automatically executed before or after the backup or restore operation:

  • Pre-execution: Run a batch program before the backup job.

  • Post-execution: Run a batch program after the backup/compare job is completed.

  • Execution Delay: Period of time the agent waits before or after the backup job and the execution of the batch job.

+ Execution Delay: Period of time the
agent waits before or after the

                                  batch job.
Click OK when finished.

The configuration options are stored and used until you change them.

NOTE: For Windows NT & Windows 95 clients: If you use the Client Agent to perform the remote client backups and restores, the password set for the Client Agent will override any sharing password set for the workstation. If you do not use the Client Agent for the ARCserveIT jobs, you will be prompted for the sharing passwords at the ARCserveIT Manager side. Make sure the passwords match on both the ARCserveIT Manager and the share level password.

NOTE: Note for Windows NT & Windows 95 clients: An option called ProActive Backup is available, which will allow you to protect the data on a server by allowing you to initiate proactive manual backups, or enabling automatic backups triggered by warning programs installed by certain hardware vendors. For further information on how to configure this option, please refer to ARCserveIT Client Agent for NT or ARCserveIT Client Agent for 95 on-line help.

Setting a workstation password

If you have specified a password for the client workstation (through the Push Agent's Preferences screen), you must specify the password in ARCserveIT as follows:

  1. From the Browser, right-click on the client

  2. Select Security from the pop-up menu

  3. Enter the password

  4. Click OK
