Client based server administration
Administrative interfaces
Advanced Server brings together two different environments: the UNIX system and
Microsoft Windows network clients. Advanced Server provides administrative
tools in each environment for managing the different aspects of Advanced Server
services, user accounts, filesystems, and printers. The net commands on
the server are a suite of command line utilities that focus more on UNIX
aspects of server management; the Windows NT Server Tools are graphical
tools that run on Windows workstations and focus more on the Windows aspects of
server management.
In general, use the net commands to create and initially configure
server resources because a UNIX perspective is important while setting up
user accounts, filesystems, and printers. Once the initial setup is complete,
use the Windows NT Server Tools to manage properties specific to
network clients (such as group memberships, user profiles, and workstations
allowed access). The Windows NT Server Tools are also a more
convenient way of administering resource access permissions, the file
replication service, the WINS service, the server's role, auditing, trust
relationships and for viewing Advanced Server event log.
Windows based administration tools
The following Windows based administration tools are available for most Windows
workstations:

-
used to create, modify and delete users accounts and administrative groups,
and to administer server policies such as auditing and trust relationships
Server Manager
-
used to manage the server properties, resources and services
Event Viewer
-
used to view the system, audit and application event logs maintained by the
server
Policy Editor
-
used to modify the Registry to control user actions (user profiles)
as well as computer actions for users and groups
WINS Administrator (NT only)
-
used to administer the WINS database when the WINS service is running
ASU Administrator (NT only)
-

Installing the Windows based administration tools
The Windows based administration tools are made available to the network through
the Advanced Server ASTOOLS share.
