Advanced File and Print Server Quick Start Guide

Connecting to network resources

The basic steps for accessing network resources are the same for all Windows workstations: set up the networking configuration, logon to the network and attach to shared resources available on the server. Each version of Windows has a slightly different procedure so refer to Windows Help for information specific to your workstation.

To access network resources from a Windows 95 workstation:

  1. The properties of the network configuration can be modified by performing a mouse right-button click on the Network Neighborhood icon and selecting Properties from the pop-up menu. To ensure that the client is set up properly to communicate with the SCO server, check that the following options have been selected:

    Transport protocol
    TCP/IP

    Primary network logon
    Client for Microsoft Networks

    Logon validation
Log on to Windows NT domain

    Workgroup
    Advanced_Server_domain_name

    Windows NT domain
    Advanced_Server_domain_name

NOTE: Making changes to your networking configuration will require that you restart Windows. Be sure to save any open files and shut down properly from the Start button.

See Windows Help for information on configuring networking on your workstation.

  2. To log onto the Advanced Server network:

    1. From the desktop, select StartRIGHT ARROWShutdown and toggle the option "Close all programs and log on as a different user".

    2. In the log on pop-up screen, enter your user account and password. If a dialog box for Workgroup is displayed, enter Advanced_Server_domain_name.

If successful, a message is displayed that the user's credentials have been validated. If the logon failed, and network access is denied, see "Unable to log onto the network".

  3. To browse the network for all available resources, double-click on the Network Neighborhood icon. When the list of servers is displayed, select a server (double-click), and then a share.

File shares can be accessed using the Network Neighborhood, or by mapping the share to a local drive. To map a local drive letter to a shared directory, double-click on the My Computer icon and click on the Map Network Drive button. Enter the server name and resource name in the Path: field using the format \\server_name\resource_name.

To use a printer share, add a network printer on the workstation:

    StartRIGHT ARROWSettingsRIGHT ARROWPrintersRIGHT ARROWAdd Printer

Select the printer by browsing the network.

After successfully connecting to a server resource from a workstation, learn more about the capabilities and management of Advanced Server by reading "Administration basics".
