Command and shell script compatibility

The general intent of user-level compatibility in UnixWare is to provide shell script compatibility for SCO OpenServer applications. With this in mind, command compatibility between SCO OpenServer and UnixWare has been addressed in several ways:

• some SCO OpenServer commands were ported to UnixWare and are included in an appropriate directory that is part of the standard PATH (example: lf, lr, lx) are all included in /usr/bin; reference manual pages for such commands are provided

• some UnixWare commands have been altered to check the execution environment of the current process for an environment variable, OSRCMDS; if this variable is set, the UnixWare command calls the SCO OpenServer command with appropriate options (example: cpio)

• some SCO OpenServer commands (or options to common commands) were not ported to UnixWare; these commands are either peculiar to the SCO OpenServer environment, not typically used in shell scripts, or are components of technology not part of UnixWare (examples: divvy, authck)

Here's what to do to create a shell environment more like that on SCO OpenServer:

• At the command line, in a shell script, or in a startup file (such as profile(4)) type or include the following statements:

     OSRCMDS=on
     export OSRCMDS
  

  Setting the OSRCMDS environment variable in the current process environment causes the shell to invoke the SCO OpenServer versions of some commands that are found in /OpenServer/bin.

• Run the scompat command or set the SCOMPAT environment variable to get compatibility for older applications. See scompat(1). Also see uname(1).

• If an SCO OpenServer application will not run, use the elfmark(1) command to add an identifier to SCO OpenServer Extensible Linking Format (ELF) applications that may not have been detected properly (e.g., applications built using some non-SCO compilers). See elfmark(1).
