About HTML

HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is a DTD (Document Type Definition) of ISO Standard 8879:1986: SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language). HTML is a collection of marked styles that define the various components of an online hypertext document. While SCOhelp can display plain ASCII documents, if you want SCOhelp to display formatted text, you must code your document in HTML.

You can write HTML documents as ASCII text with HTML tags using any ASCII text editor, such as vi(1) or emacs. In addition, SCOhelp provides full support for the ISO 8859-1 Latin Alphabet No. 1 character set. However, not all text editors and word processors produce character codes for Latin Alphabet No. 1.

NOTE: For a file to be recognized as HTML source, it must include an .html or .htm suffix.

You can preview any document you write using HTML by selecting:

File -> Open Page

To view the HTML source for any document, see ``Viewing document source and information''.

For information on writing HTML documents using SCO standards, see ``Creating HTML files''. Chapter 5, ``Using Composer'' in Introduction to Netscape Communicator also contains information on creating HTML pages with Netscape Communicator. In addition, you can get more information on writing HTML documents by selecting:

Help -> Help Contents -> Composing and editing Web pages

In addition to the characters that you can enter directly with a text editor or word processor, you can also use ``Numerical character references'' to include special HTML characters. The ISO names are included for future reference only and might not currently be used as entity names in HTML.
