Administering filesystems

Checking and repairing filesystems

When you boot the system after an abnormal shutdown, the fsck(1M) utility runs automatically on the root filesystem. You can also set up your other filesystems to be checked automatically before they are mounted -- See ``Modifying filesystem mount configuration''.

Filesystem checks usually proceed transparently and without intervention. You can use the fsck(1M) command to check filesystems at any time, but you must unmount the filesystem first. To check the root filesystem, you must put the system in single-user mode before running fsck(1M).

NOTE: Never check a filesystem without unmounting it first. Filesystem checks cannot be performed with the Filesystem Manager.
