Installing, managing, and removing software

Before setting up an install server

Before you set up and administer an install server, you must:

  1. Install either the Internet Utilities (inet) or NetWare Networking (nwnet) packages. These packages are provided with UnixWare.

  2. Configure your UnixWare system for TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) or IPX/SPX(TM) (Internetwork Packet eXchange/Sequenced Packet eXchange) networking, or both.

NOTE: If you are configuring your system for network installation over a TCP/IP network, you can simplify the network installations that are performed from this install server by configuring an Internet Boot Protocol (BOOTP) server on your network.

To do so, on the BOOTP server, edit the /etc/bootptab configuration file and set :sa=IP: (where IP is the install server IP address, such as 132.147.118.3).

    For more information, see bootptab(4tcp).

  3. Problems can be caused if the server is also an NIS client as it will pick up the services map rather than the local /etc/services file. This can cause both TCP/IP and IPX/SPX to be misconfigured. You need to ensure that the services map contains inetinst 6969/tcp and 1006/spx entries for network installs to work.

  4. Setting up an SPX server requires that a sapd is running. This means that the system must be configured with an internal network number via IPX/SPX configuration in netcfg(1M). The router type must also be set to FULL so that the service will be advertised using RIP.

  5. Install the Server Utilities package (server) on your system. This package is provided with UnixWare.

  6. Configure any external CD-ROM or tape drive to be used to load the packages.
