Administering Mail and Messaging

Administering Mail and Messaging

In order to manage a mail system you must be aware of the components of the mail system. This topic supplies a functional overview of these components from an administrator's viewpoint.

From a high-level perspective, there are two main components of the mail system, the mail transport agent (MTA), and one or more mail user agents (MUA's). The UnixWare Mail and Messaging system also has an underlying message store that is used by both the MTA and the MUAs. In addition, there are also Internet servers that provide POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP support.
