Do not make the mistake of defining as a modem a line that is a direct line (or in any way not a modem). If you make this mistake, the o option in the Dialers(4bnu) file that tries to reset modem values will hang the line forever waiting for responses to the modem-setting commands. If you make this mistake, change the line to direct and reboot your system.
