Step 2: set up name-to-address mapping
Name-to-address mapping consists of
routines that application programs can call
to determine the addresses of
services and machines on the network.
These routines are combined into libraries,
with one library associated with
each available transport provider.
For every network available to the local system,
the network administrator must create and maintain
the following files used by the library routines:

the
hosts
file, which lists the addresses of machines on the network

the
services
file, which lists the port numbers of
services available across the network
The files that support TCP/IP must be located in
/etc.
The files that support other networks must be located in
/etc/net/transport, where
transport
is the name of the transport provider.
