To reduce network traffic on the TCP/IP network, the internal SAP/RIP server running on each host is replaced by one or more Domain SAP/RIP Servers (DSS). NetWare clients and servers that communicate using TCP/IP must locate a DSS at boot time by reading a pre-configured IP address or by contacting a Domain Name System (DNS) server. All servers and clients that use NetWare over IP must be configured as hosts within a special DNS subdomain in addition to any existing entries for them in any parent or sibling domains. The name of the subdomain usually takes the form nwip.parent_domain_name. The DSSs must be configured as DNS name servers for the subdomain. The domain's NS records should also list the DSSs as its name servers. For more information, see the Novell NetWare/IP Administrator's Guide.
If NWIP is configured over TCP/IP on a UnixWare system, the NWIP daemon tries to establish contact with the preferred DSSs. If a DSS does not respond, the server sends a DNS query to find out the DSSs for the NWIP domain. It will then attempt to establish contact with these DSSs.
This section describes parameters that you can use to configure IPX/SPX over TCP/IP using the Network Configuration Manager:
