The LDAP Manager allows multiple daemons to run on the same machine, thereby permitting centralized LDAP system administration. However, in order for this to work, each individual daemon must communicate with a different port.
By default, LDAP daemons are assigned port 389. It is important, when selecting a different port, not to use those already in use by an existing daemon, or those assigned by the operating system to standard processes. The file /etc/services lists the ports already in use, along with their associated processes: for example, port 21 is assigned to ftp. In general, user-specified port selections should be in the range 200-487.
If a port is selected that is already in use, the LDAP Manager will fail to start.
