In order to provide UnixWare applications with a UnixWare-like interface to the NetWare® server, the NUC was created to make NetWare file, print, and directory services available to UnixWare.
The NUC uses UnixWare semantics to present a view of the files on a NetWare server volume, but does not compromise the security of the remote NetWare server. With NUC installed on a UnixWare system, UnixWare system users can directly access files on remote NetWare servers as if those files were local.
The NUC (or its underlying software) distributes to NetWare all local UnixWare system calls that reference file, print, and directory (that is, NetWare Directory Services or NDS) services on a remote NetWare server platform.
NUC behavior is enhanced over other NetWare client workstations because UnixWare is a multiuser, multitasking, multiprocessor operating system.
