NetWare backup and restore

Sample SBACKUP session

The example procedure included here shows you how to use the SBACKUP.NLM for NetWare 3.12 to backup a UnixWare system.

In the following procedure, ``Select'' means to highlight the indicated entry in a display or dialog box and press the <Enter> key.

  1. Load the backup engine, by entering:

    LOAD SBACKUP

SBACKUP asks you to choose a backup device driver from the ones it detects on the server. Select one from the list. The main menu appears.

  2. Select Select Target to Backup/Restore. The ``NetWare Servers with Target Services'' window appears.

  3. Choose the name of a server on the same network as the UnixWare system that you want to back up.

  4. Select server.Workstations, where server is the name of the server that you chose in the previous step. The system asks for a password on the server selected.

  5. Type in the Supervisor or Admin NetWare username, and its password. SBACKUP now either displays a list of workstations connected to the server, or (if there is only one workstation connected) asks for a valid username on the workstation.

  6. Select the machine name that corresponds to your UnixWare system, if necessary; then, enter a valid login and password for the UnixWare system.

The login you enter determines what files can be backed up; that is, only files that can be accessed by the login you enter will be backed up.

If you want to backup the entire UnixWare system, you should enter the root login and password.

    The main menu appears again.

  7. Select Backup Menu; the backup menu appears.

  8. Select Backup Selected Target.

  9. Enter a working directory for the backup; this is where SBACKUP will place error and log files for the backup. We recommend SYS:SYSTEM\TSA. Press <Enter> after you type in the directory name.

    The backup options menu appears.

  10. The ``What to Back Up'' field indicates what will be backed up on the UnixWare system. ``UNIX Workstation'' in this field indicates that all non-remote filesystems will be backed up. To change this field, press <Enter>. Then, press <Ins> to choose a particular directory at which the backup will begin.

By default, all directories and files below this directory in the filesystem will be backed up.

In the directory selection window, the root directory (/) is shown as ROOT:.

  11. Press the <Enter> key once you highlight the directory you want. The ``What to Back Up'' field now displays your selection.

  12. Press the <Enter> key to return to the Backup Options menu.

  13. Choose other backup options available through the TSA by highlighting the appropriate field and pressing <Enter>. An options screen is displayed from which you can choose various options or accept the default. Press <Esc> when you are done.

  14. A window is displayed that asks if you want to proceed with the backup; select ``Yes''; the Start Backup menu appears.

  15. Select Start Backup Now.

  16. Put a label on the backup media, indicating the date and time you began the backup.

  17. Insert the media in the appropriate drive when prompted and press <Enter>.

SBACKUP now prompts you for a label for the media.

  18. Enter a Label for the media and press <Enter>.

SBACKUP keeps a list of backup sessions that you can later use to select a particular backup for restore. It uses the Label you supply to keep track of backup sessions. SBACKUP will check the media label to verify the session on restore.

Once you enter the label, SBACKUP mounts the media and begins the backup operation. It shows the progress of the backup in a status screen.

  19. When a message appears indicating the completion of the backup, press <Enter>. The backup menu appears.

  20. Press <Esc> twice to exit SBACKUP.
