NetWare Loadable Modules

Installing the NLMs

Follow this procedure to install the UnixWare NLMs on your NetWare server from the diskettes you created in ``Reading the NLMs from UnixWare onto DOS diskettes''.

  1. If you are installing the NLMs on a NetWare server for the first time, go to Step 2.

If you are re-installing the UnixWare NLMs over a previous installation of the same software, and want to preserve a copy of your current NLM setup, copy your existing SYS:SYSTEM/UNISTART.NCF file to another file name.

For details of how to do this, refer to ``Preserving existing NLMs during installation''.

  2. Load the TCPIP.NLM on your server console. Do this with the following command:

    LOAD TCPIP

If the TCPIP.NLM module is not found, consult your NetWare administrator and documentation for information on how to install the module.

If the TCP/IP module is already loaded, the system will display a message that tells you so.

  3. Load the installation program on the server console by entering:

    load install

    at the server console prompt.

  4. Once the installation program starts, choose Product Options from the main menu (or the ``Maintenance/Selective Install Menu'' in some versions) and then:

  5. Insert the diskette labelled NLM Disk 1 into a diskette drive.

  6. Enter the name of the directory in which the SERVER.EXE program is installed and then press <Enter>. The installation program begins reading the software off of the diskette and installing it on the server.

The usual location is the root directory of the primary hard disk, or a subdirectory of the root (such as C:\NWSERVER).

The location you specify depends on how you installed NetWare. (You can try looking in the file AUTOEXEC.BAT on your server's hard drive; this file usually contains a line that starts the server. See your NetWare installation documentation for more information.)

When the end of the first diskette is reached, the installation program prompts you for the second diskette.

  7. Remove the first diskette from the diskette drive, insert the diskette labelled ``NLM Disk 2'', and press the <Esc> key.

The installation program reads files off of the second diskette and installs them on the server.

Once it reaches the end of the second diskette, the installation program displays:

NUC 3/4.X NetWare Unix Client Product is installed.

  8. Press the <Esc> key and remove the diskette.

The installation program returns you to the ``Currently Installed Products'' screen, which now displays an entry for NWUC.

  9. Press the <Esc> key twice (three time on NetWare 4.x) and then press <Enter> to leave the installation utility and return to the console prompt.

  10. You now need to bring the server down and restart it. To do this, enter the following two commands at the console prompt:

    DOWN
    <Messages displayed...>
    EXIT

This will bring the server down and exit to DOS.

  11. At the DOS prompt, enter:

    SERVER

to restart the server. As the server starts, a new virtual screen is displayed on the server console, the ``Product Kernel Message'' screen. This screen is used by the NWUC product software to display informational and error messages. The NLM that manages this screen (PKERNEL.NLM) should remain loaded as long as any of the UnixWare NLMs are loaded.

  12. On a NetWare 4.x server only, execute the following command at the server console prompt (use the key sequence <Alt><Esc> to switch between console screens):

    load inetdb admin-login password

where admin-login is the administrative login for the server (Admin by default) and password is the password for that login. (This command needs to be performed once only; that is, you do not need to repeat it after subsequent reboots of the server.)

Once you complete the above procedure, all of the available volumes on the NetWare server are available in DOS mode or NetWare mode. Those volumes with the NFS name space are available in NetWare mode; those without the NFS name space are available in DOS mode (use the NetWare VOLUMES console command to see a list of currently mounted volumes and name spaces.
