The following message would indicate that the link has been closed because the physical connection, such as over a telephone line, has been lost:

If you see a warning such as the following, the link has been dropped because the line was noisy:
LCP WARNING Link quality poor - Link DroppedThe link will be dropped if more than a certain proportion of echo samples fail to be returned correctly. Echo sampling can be turned off by setting the echo sample period to 0 for the LCP protocol.
