The PCONSOLE utility

Using quick setup in PCONSOLE

The ``Quick Setup'' option allows you to get your default print objects (print queue, printer, print server) up and running quickly.

The following quick setup procedure will assume two laser printers, called PR_Far and PR_Near. They will be serviced by a print server called PS_1 through two queues called Q_Far and Q_Near, both located on a single NetWare server which will be called NWFS_1.

Printer PR_Far will be connected to the parallel port LPT1 on the NetWare server, and printer PR_Near will be connected to parallel port LPT1 on a client workstation.

  1. Connect your printer to the parallel (LPT) port of the server.

  2. From a workstation, log in to the NetWare server as ADMIN.

    For example:

    LOGIN NWUFS_1/.ADMIN.ACME

  3. Type PCONSOLE at the command line.

    The Available Options menu appears.

  4. If the current context is the desired one, skip to Step 5. If not,

  5. Use Quick Setup to define PS_1, PR_Far, and Q_Far:

NOTE: If you accept the default names for the printing objects, you need only to press <F10>. To select a different volume, <Ins> to browse for a volume to hold the print queue. Change the names and printer configuration as you wish.

  6. Use Quick Setup to add PR_Near and Q_Near:

  7. Press <F10> to save the changes.

You are finished using PCONSOLE for now.

  8. Press <Esc> until you get a confirmation box; then select Yes to get to the workstation command line.

  9. At the NetWare Services server, load (or start) the print server.

  10. (Conditional) If you are running NPRINTER on a workstation, load port driver NPRINTER.EXE or nprinter(1ipx) daemon.

To load NPRINTER.EXE on a DOS, Windows, or OS/2 station, type

    NPRINTER printservername printernumber

For example, the following command connects printer PR_NEAR to the print server, since PR_NEAR was assigned the number 1 as the print number:

    NPRINTER PS_1 1

For more information on starting nprinter, see the nprinter(1ipx) manual page.

After the NetWare port driver is loaded, workstations can send print jobs to the printer.

NOTE: Each printer that is attached to a workstation requires a network port driver (NPRINTER.EXE).
