Maintaining the NetWare server

Bringing down and restarting NetWare

Use this procedure to start and stop your NetWare server.

Make sure all of your users are logged out of the server if you shut it down.

The following list describes the prerequesites:

Carry out the following steps:

  1. To bring down the NetWare server process, from scoadmin, select NetWare, then select the NetWare Server Status utility.

    Use the arrow buttons to change the time, in seconds, before shutdown at the ``Grace period before shutdown'' variable. The default is 60 seconds.

    To ensure that users log off before you bring down the server, select to send a message to them that the server is coming down.

  2. Click on Stop.

    A message appears and indicates that the server is being brought down. This may take several minutes to perform. If you want to stop the server from coming down at this time, click Abort.

  3. To bring the NetWare server process back up, select the NetWare Server Status utility again.

    A message appears indicating that the ``server is down''.

  4. Click on Start.

    In order to start the NetWare server process, the IPX protocol stack must be active.

    There are several ways to check at the UnixWare command line whether the stack is active:

    To start the stack again, type startnps at the command line.
