Inputting Japanese characters

This topic describes the basics of using sjxm, which is a Japanese Input Method provided in UnixWare® 7.

The Japanese writing system uses different types of characters: ideograms called kanji, and phonetic characters called kana. Kana characters consist of two alphabets called hiragana and katakana. There are approximately 3000 commonly used kanji ideograms, and 46 of both hiragana and katakana characters. Japanese words may also be represented as phonemes using Latin letters. This representation is called romaji.

The sjxm program provides you with methods for entering (two-byte) kanji characters, kana characters, letters and symbols. These characters may also be converted to other characters. The five input methods provided with sjxm are:
