Inputting Japanese characters

The pre-edit mode of sjxm

sjxm requires you to operate in a pre-edit mode to convert romaji or kana input into a kana-kanji string. Pre-editing works as follows:

  1. Select the input mode. The default mode is for romaji characters to be entered and automatically converted to (double-width) hiragana.

  2. Enter a phonetic expression (in either romaji or kana) that represents the string to be converted. The Japanese characters are entered between two vertical bars. Note that double-byte characters are now being used.

  3. Convert the expression to a kana-kanji string by pressing <Space>. The string is highlighted.

  4. Check the accuracy of the conversion and apply any corrections from a system-generated list of homonyms.

  5. Accept the conversion by pressing <Enter>. This ends the pre-edit mode for that string.
