Backup and Restore

Restore operations allow you to recover information that may have been lost as a result of human or mechanical error. You can use the restore method that corresponds to the backup method used to create the archive volume to restore files, directories, filesystems, data partitions, disks, and partitioning information. There are several means of archiving and restoring data on your UnixWare 7 system.

• ARCserve^®IT v6.6 from Computer Associates^® is a comprehensive, easy-to-use backup and restore product for your UnixWare 7 system. For more information, see ``Introducing ARCserveIT v6.6 from Computer Associates''.

• The emergency recovery method uses the emergency_disk(1M) and emergency_rec(1M) commands to create bootable diskettes and tape(s) to archive the primary hard disk. These commands back up both user and system data and allow recovery from the unlikely occurrence that the system is not bootable and/or the hard disk is damaged. Typically, emergency recovery diskettes and tape(s) are created once--after UnixWare^® and all add-on software is installed.

• ufsdump(1M) and ufsrestore(1M) are commands for archiving ufs filesystems.

• cpio(1), tar(1), and volcopy(1M) are basic UnixWare system commands for archiving and copying files. cpio is especially suitable for transferring files between different types of UNIX systems.
