Using Novell NetWare

Table of Contents

SCO Merge supports Novell NetWare network services under DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups. Novell NetWare is not supported under Windows 95.

Configuring NetWare access

SCO Merge provides a NetWare redirector (lccipx.com) that gives DOS and Windows 3.1 sessions access to NetWare hosts as standard NetWare drives. This utility is compatible with NetWare 3.11.

DOS users can access Novell NetWare servers using a NetWare shell, such as netx.exe, xmsnetx.exe, emsnetx.exe, net3.exe, net4.exe, and so forth.

To make NetWare access available under SCO Merge, first obtain a copy of netx.com from a NetWare client machine and copy it to J:\share. In addition, each user who wants to access NetWare hosts must include the following lines in his or her personal autoexec.bat file:

   J:\merge\lccipx
   J:\share\netx

You should also install NetWare as the Windows network driver by following the instructions in ``Installing Novell NetWare for Microsoft Windows''.

NOTE: SPX is not supported by lccipx.exe, therefore using SCO Merge as a print server may not function properly. Any networking applications that require more than IPX will not be functional under SCO Merge with the current lccipx.exe. For example, NetWare router cannot be implemented under SCO Merge.

Accessing NetWare drives

Once your system has been configured for NetWare, you can access NetWare drives from your DOS and Windows 3.1 sessions the same way you would on a stand-alone PC.

When you start a DOS or a Windows 3.1 session, SCO Merge automatically chooses a drive letter for your NetWare drive.

Log into this drive just as you would on any standard NetWare client.

NOTE: Because the default value of lastdrive is N, the drive letter that will be assigned your NetWare drive is O. Your NetWare drive may not function properly using this drive letter. It is recommended that you set lastdrive to a value earlier than N (for example, K or L), so your NetWare drive is assigned a drive letter other than O.

Supported NetWare utilities

Most of the basic NetWare text base utilities/commands from the Novell NetWare 3.11 distribution are supported under SCO Merge.

The supported utilities include:

Installing Novell NetWare for Microsoft Windows

SCO Merge supports Novell NetWare network access for Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups. NetWare is not supported for Windows 95.

Before you install the Novell NetWare network driver, you should determine the version of the NetWare shell that your system uses. You need this information during the installation process to make the appropriate network driver selection.

NOTE: You cannot have the Novell NetWare network installed for Windows at the same time that the DOS Merge network printing driver is installed. See ``The DOS Merge network printing driver'' in Chapter 2 for more information.

Installing with Windows 3.1 and 3.11

Follow these steps to install the Novell NetWare network for Windows 3.1 and 3.11:

  1. If you are already at the DOS prompt, continue with Step 2. Otherwise, if you are working in a Desktop environment, invoke the Merge Setup utility, select the Personal Merge Administration, and choose the Run DOS to Configure Windows 3.1 option. A DOS session specially configured for Windows setup will start.

If you are working in a non-Desktop environment, start a DOS session by typing the following command at the UNIX system prompt:

    winsetup

  2. Change your current drive and directory to the directory where Windows 3.1 or 3.11 is installed and type:

    setup

setup displays your current hardware configuration.

  3. Use the arrow keys to select the Network option, and press <Enter> to see the list of network drivers.

  4. Find and select the Novell NetWare line for the NetWare shell you are using.

  5. Press <Enter>.

The display changes back to the hardware list with the selection:

       Accept the configuration shown above.

  6. Press <Enter>.

setup asks for various Windows installation disks.

  7. Insert the requested disks and press <Enter>.

setup installs the Novell NetWare Support and exits, leaving you at the DOS prompt.

  8. Type quit to exit your DOS session.

Installing with Windows for Workgroups

NOTE: You must get special driver files from Novell to install Novell NetWare Network Support for Windows for Workgroups. These files are supplied with Windows 3.1, but not with Windows for Workgroups. On the Windows 3.1 distribution disks, the files are in compressed format. To use them with Windows for Workgroups, you must first uncompress them by following the instructions that come with Windows 3.1. If you do not have Windows 3.1 disks, you can obtain these files from Novell. These files include:

Follow these steps to install Novell NetWare Network Support with Windows for Workgroups:

  1. If you are working in a Desktop environment, access the Merge Tools.

  2. Start a Windows for Workgroups session by invoking the Win utility.

If you are working in a non-Desktop environment, start a Windows for Workgroups session by typing the following command at the UNIX system prompt:

    win

  3. Open the Network window by double-clicking on the Network icon.

  4. Run the Network Setup application by double-clicking on the Network Setup icon.

  5. Click on the Networks button. A dialog box with three radio buttons appears.

  6. Click the bottom button (Install Windows support for the following network only). A scrollable list of the networks that Windows for Workgroups knows about appears.

  7. Find and select the Novell NetWare line for the NetWare shell you have.

  8. Click on the OK button. This brings you back to the original Network Setup dialog box.

  9. Click on the OK button.

The Network Setup application now needs the special driver files for Novell NetWare Support.

  10. Type the drive and path to where these files are located. For example, if they are on a diskette in drive A, type:

    a:\

  11. Click on Restart Windows if you want to continue the Windows for Workgroups session.
