Using new media

There may be an occasion when you want to introduce new media into the GFS rotation scheme, and retire an old one. For example: if after checking the GFS Rotation Job Report, you discover that one of the media has been generating a lot of errors, you can take this media out of rotation and introduce a new one.

The easiest way to remove media from the rotation cycle is to go into ARCserveIT's Media Database (through the Database Manager) and delete the media from the database (marking that media destroyed). If you delete a daily media from the database, and you are preserving 4 daily media, you will now need to introduce new media to the daily rotation. You don't need to worry about when you should use a blank media for the daily job, the GFS rotation Daily Log will tell you.

You can also introduce new media without taking any media out of the rotation cycle by just inserting a blank one instead of the one GFS rotation calls for. Just remember that GFS rotation always looks to reuse the oldest media in the database, and you've just increased by one the number of media in that particular 'bin' (depending on the day you introduced the media). For example, if Jim used a blank media instead of reusing a daily media, then he would have 5 daily media to recycle through now, not 4.
