A distinct group of media pools are created and assigned to a particular GFS rotation scheme. The three media pools created correspond to the three types of backup performed:
The media within these groups are maintained by ARCserveIT and are recycled and reused throughout the cycle of the rotation scheme.
Media pools are named using the Media Pool Name Prefix entered by the user, followed by an extension provided by ARCserveIT. The GFS rotation scheme uses the Media Pool Name Prefix to:
For example, the media pool who's Media Pool Name Prefix name is "BK", the following media pools are created for your GFS rotation scheme:
One Save Set and one Scratch Set is created for each of the three media pools associated with a GFS rotation job. These sets are used for managing the media within each of the three GFS pools.
Media is assigned to Save Sets after a GFS backup job has been run, and stays there until it is eligible to be assigned to a Scratch Set. This happens after the duration of the media's retention time expires. After the retention time for a media expires, it is eventually rotated to the Scratch Set in its pool. ARCserveIT will not allow media in the Save Set to be moved to the Scratch Set until two criteria are met:
In ARCserveIT's Media Pool Manager, you can view the media available in a Save Set or a Scratch Set by clicking on the icon for each type of set in a media pool.
