Restoring your ARCserveIT host

Your ARCserveIT host is the client on which your ARCserveIT software is installed. This computer contains all the ARCserveIT files.

To restore your ARCserveIT host follow the instructions outlined below.

Refer to your UNIX documentation to re-install the UNIX operating system.

Use the ARCserveIT Release and Installation Notesto re-install ARCserveIT.

The ARCserveIT database contains information about what has been previously backed up. You will need to recover the ARCserveIT database so that you can restore the rest of the information on the host.

Refer to the next section, "Recovering the ARCserveIT database" for more detailed information.

Now that you have restored the database, select "Restore by File System" to show you the ARCserveIT host. You can pick and choose what you want to recover (or select the entire host).

If you plan to restore the entire host, exclude the following directories from your restore job using the Exclude Directory Filter: /bin /etc /usr/bin /usr/lib These directories contain system sensitive files that should not be overwritten. In the event of a system crash, these files will be restored through the system re-installation (see Disaster Recovery Step 1). Attempting to over-write these files could cause your system to fail. The <ARC_HOME >directory should also be excluded from your full host restore. Attempts to overwrite the restore process while a restore is in progress, will cause the job to hang and fail. ARCserveIT user created directories such as ./jobs and ./logs may be restored later through selective restore. You may use "Restore by File System" to select the version of your choice. The Destination Path for the Restore operation will typically be: <hostname>:/ - where <hostname> is the name of your local host.

Selecting the File System view allows you to click the client you want to restore, without having to worry about which media and sequence numbers you need for the job.

ARCserveIT will find the latest version of the host to restore. If you do not want the latest version, you can use ARCserveIT's "Version History" function to pick the version to restore. Chapter 7, "Restoring your data" for more information and specifics about using this option.

You can select to restore to the same, or a different UNIX client.

If you are trying to restore the client to the state it was in before it crashed, then during the restore procedure you should overwrite any conflicting files. If you are unsure, you can choose to rename any files that exist on the client.

ARCserveIT will then tell you the tapes that you will need. ARCserveIT knows which media contain the latest version of all the files for the client you want to recover.
