Media Rules Tab

Select Media Pool

This feature verifies that the media selected as the destination, is not being used without being associated with the media pool it belong to. In addition, all of the First Media Options and Span Media Options are associated with the media pool listed in this field.

If the destination media selected is not associated with a particular media pool, the default setting can be used and this field can be ignored.

If the destination media is associated with a particular media pool, you must select that media's corresponding media pool name in the Select Media Pool field. To set the media pool name, click on the Select Media Pool drop-down menu and select the media pool name.

If the selected destination media is associated to a particular media pool, failure to set the Select Media Pool field correctly will cause the backup job to fail.

Eject Media

If this option is selected, the media will be ejected from the device after the backup job is completed.

First Media Options

By default, ARCserveIT appends any data to the media selected for the backup job. However, you can also overwrite media in the drive, by selecting another Media Option. Refer to the table below for the functionality of each option:

First Media Option

Usage

Overwrite Same Media Name, or Blank Media

Overwrite the media in the drive, only if it is the one specified for the job (set in the Media Name field), or if the media is blank. If media with a different name is in the drive when the job takes off, the job will fail.

Overwrite Same Media Name, or Blank Media First, then any Media

Overwrite any media that is in the drive. Selecting this option initiates ARCserveIT to check to see if media in the drive is the one specified for the job. If it isn't, ARCserveIT checks to see if the media is blank. If it is not blank either, ARCserveIT reformats whatever media it finds in the device (with the name that is in the Media Name field) and starts backing up files at the beginning of the media.

Only GFS rotation media will not be overwritten. If ARCserveIT finds that the media in the drive is an GFS rotation media, the job will fail.

Overwrite Same Media Name, or Any Media First, then Blank Media

Using this option overwrites any media that is in the drive, with the same name as in the Media Name field, or any media. If media with a different name is in the drive or if the media in the drive is an GFS rotation media, the job will fail.

Time-out for First Media

Number of minutes ARCserveIT will wait before attempting to access media, before cancelling a job.

Unlike appending to a media, overwriting a media formats the media and then starts writing to it at the beginning. Any data on the media is lost.

Span Media Options

If the backup job you schedule requires more than one media to back up the selected targets, ARCserveIT needs some information on what to do. If you only have one device drive, ARCserveIT will have to wait the specified number of minutes in the "Timeout for Span Media" field for you to insert the new media. If you have grouped devices together, then ARCserveIT can automatically move to the next drive and use that media. But you need to tell ARCserveIT to use only media with the same name, or blank media, or any media.

Option

Usage

Overwrite Same Media Name, or Blank Media

Using this option overwrites any media with the same media name as the sequence one media (the first media used in the backup job). The next media (sequence two) is reformatted with the name that is in the Media Name field.

Overwrite Same Media Name, or Blank Media First, then any Media

Use this option if you want ARCserveIT to overwrite any media that is in the drive. The next media (sequence two) is reformatted with the name that is in the Media Name field.

Be careful when using this option when you have grouped drives. Leaving media in a drive can cause it to be reformatted if you have told ARCserveIT to span to any media

Overwrite Same Media Name, or Any Media First, then Blank Media

Using this option overwrites any media that is in the drive, with the same name as in the Media Name field, or any media. If media with a different name is in the drive or if the media in the drive is an GFS rotation media, the job will fail.
